Narrative Therapy Storytelling Workbook

The Narrative Therapy Storytelling Workbook is a flexible, open-ended therapeutic resource designed to support narrative exploration, emotional expression, reflection, and meaning-making.

Rather than providing a predetermined story or set of prompts, this workbook gives clients space to tell a story that is meaningful to them. Depending on the client and therapeutic goals, it can be used to:

• Write their own life story or a chapter of their life
• Tell the story of a difficult experience or challenge
• Explore a challenge they have overcome and identify the strengths that helped them through it
• Process an experience they are still working through
• Create a fictional character or story that reflects their own experiences, feelings, or concerns
• Imagine how they would like the next chapter of their story to unfold

The workbook includes a variety of blank and lined storytelling pages, allowing clients to write, draw, or combine both approaches. Therapists can use open-ended questions and curiosity throughout the activity to explore themes, strengths, supports, exceptions, preferred outcomes, and alternative narratives that emerge.

There is no required way to complete the workbook and no expectation that the story have a happy or resolved ending. This resource is intentionally flexible so that clients can determine what their story means and where it goes next.
